Amazon Web Services/AWS is setting up a new aerospace cloud unit to provide cloud computing services for companies in the industry. The new business sector is called as Aerospace and Satellite Solutions under the leadership of former U.S Air Force Maj. Gen. Clint Crosier.

Crosier once led the establishment of the U.S. Space Force. The new aerospace cloud unit adds to the AWS’s already busy business services that encompass satellite design to spacecraft operations for both the public and private sectors.

For sure, the cloud solutions for aerospace firms require different approaches as compared to those in the earth. According to AWS Vice President Teresa Carlson as stated by Jon Fortt from CNBC, the companies in the sector need agile, quick and flexible solutions from cloud computing.

To break it down, the new aerospace cloud unit will offer a wide array of services, such as spaceflight support, robotic systems, mission control operations, space stations, satellite networks and others.

The newly-launched business completes Amazon’s ambition to take up more scoop in the aerospace industry. Previously, it released AWS Ground Station, a satellite connection service, and Project Kuiper, a satellite internet venture. Disclosed in November 2018, AWS Ground Station is already serving customers, like NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and satellite operators, Iridium Communications and Spire Global.

The AWS’s initiative was welcomed by positive nods from some of its customers in the space industry, such as Lockheed Martin, Geollect, Maxar Technologies and Capella Space.

Lockheed Martin Vice President Rick Ambrose said that the new cloud unit will assist customers accessing data in faster ways and obtaining new insights from sensors in space for making the data more accessible.

Aside from the aforementioned space-based businesses, Jezz Bezos has Blue Origin, a space venture that is developing next-generation rockets and spacecraft, like a lunar lender. Blue Origin is a serious contender for Elon Musk’s SpaceX and aerospace contractor Dynetics on the mission to bring astronauts on the moon by 2024.
